Antique American Sterling Repousse Napkin Ring, Ferns and Flowers
This splendid antique napkin ring is an example of the finest repousse work. Starting with the cartouche, the border is framed with ferns and foliage. Just inside the cartouche is stippling surrounding a graceful script monogram. The rims of the napkin ring have scalloped applied borders with the word “sterling” on the top border. The borders have hand made scrolls along their length. The three dimensional work of the repousse is outstanding. Blooms overlap blooms separated by foliage. The work is characteristic of Stieff, Kirk, or the other Baltimore silversmiths. The diameter opening is 1 7/8 inches and the width is 1 3/4 inches. The napkin ring weighs 46.4 grams or 1.64 ounces-considerably more than the average napkin ring at 1 ounce or less. The ring is in outstanding condition.
